Hiring Employees: What to Look For
It can be confusing for the new business owner when the time comes to begin hiring new employees. Recognizing when it's right to expand can be difficult, and the first hiring process can seem strange. How do you know who the right candidate for the job is? Even employers who have been through the hiring process dozens of times before are rarely certain that they have the perfect new employee for the job.

Questions to Ask Yourself
When you're trying to decide who to hire, there can be a feeling of information overload. By keeping the following aspects in mind, you can help narrow the criteria so you get the best possible candidate:
- What is their educational background? You can do a little research on the school they graduated from to find out about what kind of accreditation their school has. Remember to look specifically at the college from which they graduated, not just the university. One university may have a fantastic overall program but only a so-so business program.
- What kind of experience do they have? Experience can be at least as important as formal education. While a more experienced candidate may expect a higher salary, the quality of their work may be worth the additional payroll expenditure.
- What do their former employers have to say about them? The opinions of the person's former employers are incredibly valuable to you in determining if the candidate is a good fit. Was he or she a hard worker? What was the quality of his or her output? Why did he or she leave the previous employer? How did he or she fit into the work environment? These are questions which could significantly affect your hiring decision.
