How Do I Copyright My Work?

As you probably know, a copyright is a form of protection offered by the United States government which covers intellectual property on a tangible object. Copyrights can protect any “artistic” work, such as novels, songs, plays, movies, computer software, and architecture. If you have intellectual property you want to protect, a copyright may be the best way to do so. But how do you get a copyright?

How Do I Get a Copyright?

Contrary to what you may assume, you don't have to register with any government administration for a copyright. Your work is protected by copyright as soon as you have created in such a way that it is physically tangible or can be perceived by machine (such as software).

However, although you do not have to register your work to benefit from a copyright, registering with the U.S. Copyright Office does have a number of benefits. Many enjoy having a certificate of registration and having the terms of their copyright on the public record. Additionally, if you want to bring litigation against someone for infringing on your copyright, you will benefit from having registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. In general, only registered copyrights can be involved in infringement litigation.
