Should You Be an Entrepreneur?

Starting a business is quite risky. There are no guarantees you will succeed. However, there are steps which can be taken to improve your chances. By identifying your strengths and weaknesses and learning to manage them appropriately, your business will receive the greatest advantage.

First and foremost, you must be a self-starter. You will be running the show. It is up to you to create, develop, organize, and follow through. Secondly, you must learn to work well with others. Business is about establishing relationships and maintaining them. Whether they are your customers, staff, vendors, bankers, lawyers, or accountants, there are many people that will be involved with your business. It is imperative that ties are tight. However, they may not always be easy to maintain. Flexibility and patience are keys when dealing with others. In order for your business to thrive, you will need a loyal network.

Business owners must be decisive. There are many decisions which will require quick, independent judgment under heavy pressure. You must be able to take the heat and back yourself up.

Be sure you have the time and stamina. Starting a business is extremely time consuming. Eighty hour work weeks may not be uncommon. In addition, how are your organizational skills? Most businesses fail due to poor planning of financials, inventory, schedules, production, etc.

Lastly, do you have the drive? Being an entrepreneur is very wearisome, and there is a lot of stress involved. Strong motivation will help overcome burnout. However, know that a business will greatly affect your family. Are they supportive? The standard of living of owners is often greatly affected by their businesses for the better and the worse.
