Small Business Growth Strategies

Growing a business isn't just a worthy goal, it is also a necessity for a business' survival and economic well-being. There are a variety of ways to get a business beyond the bare sustenance level. All of the methods listed below have been used by other businesses successfully and can work for a number of other businesses with some planning and investment.

Penetrate the Existing Market

The first thing that comes to mind when a business thinks of growing a business is getting new customers. The customers that a company already has are the best bet for increasing sales. It is easier and more cost-effective to get people who are already buying from a business to buy more from the company than it is to find new customers and persuade them to buy from you.

Ask for Referrals

Getting new customers is another common approach to growing a business. One of the easiest ways to do this is to ask current customers for referrals. Doing a great job and assuming that a customer will pass the word on about how great the business is won’t do much to increase or expand a customer base. The company must actively seek referrals. During or after every job or sale, a satisfied customer should be asked to refer anyone else who would be interested in your products or services.

Innovate the Product or Service

Promoting and discovering new uses for a product or service is a great way to get existing customers to buy more and attract new customers as well. If an item only has one use, not very many will be sold.

Extend Market Reach

Making a product or service available to a new pool of customers or new areas of customers is a great way of growing a business. The most obvious way to do this is to open up a new location in a new town or area. New locations can also be virtual, such as a website with an online store. Another approach is to extend reach through advertising. Once a new market has been defined or identified, a company can advertise in select media that targets the market.

Attend Trade Shows

Trade shows are a great way to increase the visibility of a business. Trade shows draw people who are already interested in a type of product or service that is offered. This can powerfully improve a bottom line. The biggest trick is to select the trade shows carefully, seeking the right match for a product or service.
