Three Types of Businesses
People who want to start a business in the United States have three options, regardless of the type of business they want to start. The three general types of businesses that people can start are small businesses, partnerships, and corporations.
Small businesses, as their name states, are small. They can have only one owner. Small businesses have few employees and a small amount of sales. In a small business, the owner and the business are inseparable. That is, the owner is liable for whatever problems the business undergoes. So, a customer who sues the small business can sue the owner of the small business to recover damages. In the United States, a business is officially small if, among other things, it has less than 100 employees. Additionally, all of the profits of a small business go to the owner, who also has to sustain all of the losses personally.
When small businesses are growing, they can become partnerships to better manage their growth. As the name "partnership" suggest, partnerships are businesses that have two or more owners. The partners of a business share the profits. Among the advantages of partnerships is that they better allow personal and business finances to be separate. Also, because more people are managing the business, the business has more opportunities to grow.
The final type of business that people can open in the United States is a corporation. Corporations are the largest businesses, and they are considered their own legal individuals or entities. Essentially, a corporation is a person. As a result, the finances of a corporation are completely separate from the personal finances of its managers and owners. Additionally, corporations allow for millions of people to own them through the purchase of shares of stock, which are literally pieces of the company. Corporations provide the most opportunity for businesses to grow.
